Broadway Backwards

Peoria Players Theatre presents

Broadway Backwards

Broadway Backwards is a concept that hits very close to home for director and performer Bryan Blanks. Those patrons and community theater friends that know him well may quickly realize that the story of Broadway Backwards is a personal one. Bryan grew up in Kewanee, IL, where as a kid, the Broadway experience and lifestyle seemed like a completely different world.  However, through the support of his parents, friends, and community members, he seemed to find his own “backwards” way of filling the void of making his way to the Great White Way. Bryan states, "I got my first stab at theater during the musicals I would stage on my parents deck. I laugh now looking back at the songs I would sing or the mini shows I would direct. With cast members that consisted of my disgruntled neighbors, family members,  and sometimes pets, backwards is the perfect way to describe my first musical theater experiences at home."

Like the unconventional casting of Bryan's first productions, Broadway Backwards will feature famous musical theater selections sung by powerhouse vocalists. The twist is, these performers would never sing these selections in a real production. For example, director and performer Chip Joyce will tackle the roles of both Annie and Roxy Hart from Chicago. There are moments you will laugh at the miscast performances, but other moments when you will get lost in the new interpretation of a well-known song. Other performers include,Bruce Colligan, Laura Weaver Hughes, Bryan Blanks, Darren Jackson, Dedra Kaiser, Jarrod Hazzard, Katy Ailshie, Jeremy Kelly, and Holly Haines, just to name a few.

Broadway Backwards will feature selections from  many  popular musicals including: Wicked, Les Miserables, Waitress, Newsies, and the Rogers and Hammerstein song book. The show will be complete with high energy dance numbers including a show-stopping tap dance number to Anything Goes choreographed by Elena Paine. "I still can't get over how excited I am that all of these performers were willing to join me on this journey. It's not often that you get this much talent involved in one production, and hearing their voices together is worth the price of admission alone."

Broadway Backwards runs at Peoria Players June 9 and 10 at 7:30 pm and June 11 at 2:00 pm. Tickets are $19.00 for adults and $12.00 for patrons 20 years of age and under. You can purchase tickets online at peoriaplayers.org or by calling 688-4473.
