A Man For All Seasons

A Man For All Seasons
Corn Stock Winter Playhouse
March 3-4 & 9-11 at 7:30 pm, and March 12 at 2:30 pm

Corn Stock Winter Playhouse's final production of the 2016-17 season, A MAN FOR ALL SEASONS, reminds us that political intrigue has been around for centuries.   Directed by Tim Wyman, the show centers around the decision to break from the Pope and Catholicism by England and the power struggle that was caused by that transition.  Morality and power clashed at the King's behest to pursue his unreachable goal of having his longed for male heir.

"Never before in the history of mankind has one act - the divorce of King Henry VIII of England and his subsequent marriage to Anne Boleyn - had such a profound and far-reaching significance and is one that continues to echo through history," said Wyman in a recent interview.  "The story of A MAN FOR ALL SEASONS is one that students of history should study and not forget."

This tragic historical drama offers a brilliant portrait of Sir Thomas More in his last years as Lord Chancellor of England during the reign of Henry VIII. When Henry fails to obtain Papal approval for a divorce from Catherine of Aragon to marry Anne Boleyn, he mandates his subjects to sign an “Act of Supremacy” making him both spiritual and temporal leader of England.

Sir Thomas cannot in good conscience comply. Neither Cromwell, Cardinal Wolsey, his family nor the King himself are able to convince More as he maintains his integrity and belief in silence. Ultimately accused of high treason, this very silence leads the man to his execution and later his canonization in 1935.

"We all know the history of Henry VIII's penchant for beheading anyone who doesn't comply with his demands," Wyman said.  "The show is testament to the nature of humans in power and how they abuse that power to get what they want contrasted by a character who perseveres in his moral beliefs even if it means execution.  It's basically the true 'Game of Thrones' story brought to life."
